Dinosaur Ice Rescue Activity

Dinosaur Ice Rescue Activity

Get ready for a dino-tastic summer!

We’re saving dinosaurs trapped in icy eggs. Watch the ice melt, or help crack them open to set the dinos free.

It’s cool, messy, and so much fun for little explorers!

Activity: Freeze small dinosaur toys inside balloons filled with water. Once frozen, peel off the balloons to reveal dinosaur ice eggs. Place the ice eggs outside or in sensory bins to melt. Toddlers can watch them melt in the sun or use tools like spoons or droppers (small squeeze tools to squirt water) with warm water to dig the dinosaurs out.

What to Do:

  1. Show the kids how the ice melts in the warm sun.
  2. Talk about how warm water helps ice melt faster.
  3. Encourage them to guess how long it will take for the dinosaurs to come out.

Books to Pair:

  • How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? by Jane Yolen
  • Danny and the Dinosaur by Syd Hoff
  • National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Dinosaurs by Catherine D. Hughes

Dinosaur Songs:

  • We Are the Dinosaurs by Laurie Berkner
  • If You’re a Dinosaur and You Know It (sung to the tune of If You’re Happy and You Know It)
  • Dino Stomp (make up moves for stomping, roaring, and tail swinging)

Simple Science Element: Explain how ice is made of water that turns solid when it gets very cold. Ask the kids what happens when it warms up. Use words like solid and melt to make it sciencey but fun.

This activity is messy, fun, and perfect for a sunny summer day!

If you're looking for more easy and fun summer activities for kids, try creating Kindness Rocks! Start with a simple, heartwarming children's book about spreading kindness through painted rocks. Kids can read the story, go on nature walks to collect rocks, and have a blast painting them. Once they’re done, they can hide the rocks for others to find, spreading joy and smiles along the way!
